Why the EV is not suitable for India?

Electric vehicles are hailed as the new age, moving towards cleaner energy and leaving behind fossil fuels , but for a country lie India where the automotive industry is very different than those in other countries is this really a option fleasible for the near future.

Various companies like Hyundai , MG, Nissan , Mahindra and Tata have showcased their electric vehicle building capabilites but the question remains the same , how realistic is a dream of using EVs in India.

Lets assess some features that make it especially difficult for India, and foremost is the presence of EV charge points , first of all the charging is ridiculously slow in public charge spaces and second , there is a sheer lack of these points. In case you are thinking of using your vehicle for a trip, you will have to say goodbye to the electric car as they don’t have the range for long journeys and there isn’t any charging station on the way or your destination. Furthermore if there are charging stations , they will easily take 4-8 hours to fill your car which realistically is a time duration none of us will wait for. Companies have been providing customers with fast charge kits along with their cars but the kit is for fixed home use and not portability.

Then comes the question of price, most EVs in India presently cost above 10L to buy and considering a how it is supposed to reduce costs and be efficient , its not as spicy a deal as one would imagine considering the things you’re letting go of. Indian market is still the biggest for sub 10L cars and unless carmakers are bale to provide it cheaper, the option of buying one remains rare.

Then there comes the point of acceptance, we Indians have a very difficuilt time accepting new ideas and norms and in the case of using an EV , I personally know all the benefits and how it will keep the environment safe , will still not go ahead with an EV over a gas guzzler because of the sheer pleasure is taken away when you can’t hear the internal combustion engine purr like a kitten, EVs maybe killing the ICE but its for the boring people with no passion for driving.
